Grey Reef

Grey Reef

The “Reef” is one of the best trout fisheries in the country with an average fish count of 8000 per mile of hard fighting 16-19″ rainbow, brown and cutthroat on the upper 12miles. The best way to cover this tailwater below Grey Reef reservoir is by drift boat and our guides know this Blue Ribbon water very well.

Plan to see angling pressure with other boats making the float trip happen but rest assured there is plenty of water and fish to be productive.

This is a year round fishery known for its healthy trout population.

Winter Dec.- Feb.

Some sections of this river do freeze over so stick between to the Grey Reef launch to Lusby take out. The river still does produce great bug hatches with midges being the most prominent. A stripped streamer on a slow retrieve can be your best way to get the big ones to grab.

Dress warm and come have an adventure when the crowds are low and the fishing is still great.

Spring April & May

What an amazing time to be on the Grey Reef, chasing post spawn rainbows that are eager to replenish. Blue Wing Olives are our welcome to spring hatch so make sure to have grey bodied foam emergers stocked up. The expression that applies best to the north platte and the reef in particular is that if you not fishing something red you’re dead.

Keep a look out for the spring flushes on the reef that will kick up flows to clean the river of sediment and tumble weeds but will also send a healthy selection of scuds, annelids, and leech trout snacks. Learning the washing machine technique to clean your flies helps you get back into the next drift quickly so ask our guides to teach you.

Summer June- August

The weather is hot but so is the fishing. Bug hatches are in full swing with caddis, pale morning duns, and yellow salley’s, so dry fly fishing is game on. This helps as the moss starts to increase and you can either skinny up the nymph rigs or just commit to throwing hopper-dropper presentations. The hopper fishing gets better into the end of July and August time frame.

Another benefit to fishing this time of year is the amount of floatable river miles increases helping keep boat traffic spread out. Not to say crowds are gone by any means with the warm summer days and fishing quality being right for the summer crowds.

Fall Sept.- Nov.

This can be your best time of year for chasing aggressive brown trout by throwing streamers patterns pre spawn. As is the case with fishing grey reef is getting past the smaller fish to find the tankers and throwing a meal worth pursuit can be the best means to a fish of a lifetime.

Moss can be an issue for fishing under an indicator this time of year so either know the lanes between the moss walls from a drift boat or fish skinny rigs and dry dropper set ups. Terrestrials can still be a good idea and they are just a good time to throw.
