The Wyoming side of the more well known Big Horn River of Fort Smith, Montana where the Wind River and Big Horn meet at the Wedding of the Waters. The scenery, quality of rainbow and brown trout and lack of boat traffic make this river a must visit.
Known for its thick dry fly hatches in the spring and fall months that bring pods of rising trout to the surface. Also a great place to chase big brown, rainbow and cutthroat trout while stripping streamer patterns. Boat’s are the best way to navigate this scenic river.

Winter
The dry fly fishing in the winter her can be great if its not frozen over. Brown’s may still be spawning and apt to chase a streamer but please avoid wading the areas that look like beds.

Spring March – May
In our series of rivers we guide the Big Horn comes into good fishing shape the earliest. March and April might just be the best time for fishing the big horn. We see lots of blue wing olives hatching so have your BWO emerges ready and keep an eye out for those dry fly eaters.
Summer June- August
Grass will become more prevalent but the fishing can be fantastic with Mayfly hatches. The Pale Morning Dunes entice fish to surface feed when clarity returns post run off. While the river has more color to it and turns of the dry fly opportunities we enjoy working streamers on sink tips.
Fall September – November
If you’re chasing that pumpkin brown trout then get to the big horn river in the fall months and see if you can’t get a beast to eat a streamer. The scenery this time of year is breathtaking and the fish you catch could possibly match the colors of the landscape.
