Fremont Canyon Overview
Fremont Canyon is a 1.5 mile wade fishing stretch of the North Platte between Pathfinder and Alcova Reservoirs. The meadow section (Cardwell Access Area) has your typical riffles, runs, and pocket water with easy wading before heading into Fremont Canyon and its deep runs through big boulders and beautiful canyon. When we are experiencing high winds this can be a great option to find some relief.
The estimated fish population is 150 per mile and typical flows are around 100cfs while the remaining water is diverted through tunnels that turn the generator for the power plant near Alcova Reservoir. Think smaller water with the same quality size rainbow and brown trout of the Reef and Miracle Mile.
Best Time Of Year For These Trips Is June Through August.
If you like throwing dry flies it doesn’t get much better than the summer months in the canyon.

Winter Dec – Feb
Annelids, midges, scuds are in play as you wade the meadows section. The canyon section this time of year can be dangerous with ice forming the already hazardous boulders.
Spring Mar. -May.
Water flows should still be around 100cfs and expect to find trout sipping on blue wings. This is also the time we find fish spawing so be careful where you walk and please leave alone when paired up. Fish the bar room not the bedrooms. Shallow skinny water is the bedroom and the deeper runs and pools is where fish are staging and buck are working on their pick up lines for the hens. Eggs, worms, midges, and streamers can work well.
Summer June- Aug.
Pale morning dunes can bring 20 plus inch fish to the surface so keep an eye out for quality fish eating drys. Streamers, and dry dropper rigs will also be effective as you imitate the yellow sallies and aggressive fish.
Fall Sept.-Nov.
Best opportunity at a trophy brown trout making its way up the canyon into the meadows. Mind the spawning beds please and help take care of our tremendous resource. Nymphing and dry fly fishing is available and get a grab on that streamer will make you want to keep casting it.
